Over the Christmas period I decided to go on a Mini Social Media Detox. I believe this was the best possible time for me to take a break, as social media over this time of year can be EXTREMELY overwhelming. Me being someone who is not the materialistic type and having constant feed updates from strangers sharing their ideology of how Christmas “should” look can be uncomfortable.
Although this mini social media detox was only for 5 days, it has proven to me that I’m more than capable of surviving lol, and it most definitely prepped me up for a longer detox in the near future.
Why did I go on a social media detox?
- To clear my head from all the irrelevant information I’ve consumed
- I was comparing myself to others
- I was falling down the “consuming too much knowledge with no action” path
- I wasn’t keeping up and sticking to my blogging tasks
- I wanted to regain control of my life and time
How I knew I was ready for a social media detox
- My head would feel like it’s physically pounding when scrolling
- My eyes were feeling strained
- I have to have the brightness ALL the way down – literally 0%!
- I didn’t instantly miss it right after removing all of my apps
What my daily routine looked like?

Surprisingly, day one wasn’t as difficult as expected. I removed the Instagram, Twitter & Facebook apps from my iPhone, leaving only Whatsapp, Youtube & Pinterest. After ridding myself of these apps, I instantly felt like a weight had being lifted. I wanted to experience the first day living in the moment.

Christmas day. The day I’m most happy to be completely disconnected from the online world. This is a day most social media users will scroll endlessly, nosey’ing on other peoples fortunes and sharing (or bragging) about what they have received. Can you imagine what the average household dinner table looks like now? Everyone just “doing it for the gram”, sacrificing quality time with loved ones to please online peers. Not to sound like a complete scrooge, but this just does not appeal to me.

Three days in… still going strong. I slept like a babyyy last night! Woke up super early (6.20am) and didn’t just roll back over, I actually stayed up and completed a few blogging tasks. As the detox goes on, I have noticed the amount of times I am reaching for my phone has decreased considerably. On day 1, I’d still reach for my phone constantly and each time felt like a new reminder of “oh sh*t there’s nothing there” lol so I’d just go on to Pinterest for a couple minutes to feed my social craving.

Wow it just gets better. Again I slept like a baby, woke up early, had breakfast and did a bit of morning reading. I had finished two chapters in my book “Do It or Ditch It” all before 9am which felt SO satisfying. I just know if I hadn’t of been on this detox, Instagram would have been open and the scrolling would have commenced all morning. Then I’d feel bad about myself. Then the cycle would have continued. Later I went for a sauna and swim, completed more blogging tasks, went for a walk, out to dinner and then treated myself to a movie night.

Better late than never. I FINALLY got my mojo back and my creative spirit. I banged out blog post after blog post, planning, scheduling, editing, creating.. Everything I LOVE and had lost. This was the whole point of the detox and I’ve proved to myself it had worked.
So I’m not going to lie to you and say my life has dramatically changed and this detox was groundbreaking lol, but by the end of the detox I do feel slightly refreshed, motivated and optimistic. I no longer feel like I’m drowning in overwhelm and comparison. So overall it was a success.
- Sleep pattern improved
- Woke up early and refreshed
- Got tasks completed without procrastination
- Can think clearer again and have organic ideas
- Was able to make my own choices without seeking validation
As I said before, I knew I was ready for this detox. And I know that because I had failed many previous attempts of a detox (barely making it an hour before re-installing my apps!). This time round I literally said byeeeee and that there was no looking back.
TIP: If you know it’s time for a detox but you’re not sure whether you have enough will power, a change of scenery will definitely help! Not being sucked in to your everyday habits and comfort will allow you to better focus. I would recommend booking yourself a mini getaway. This doesn’t have to be far, even if it’s a few nights in a hotel, or with family members. Just away from your comfort.
